Just came back from a three week trip to Vietnam with three books: the Lonely Planet, the Rough Guide, and Footprint Handbook.

The Rough Guide is the best guidebook around for the country. It is superior to the Lonely Planet guide in the breadth and depth of coverage and especially its accuracy. I liked LP for other countries but here they did a very poor job.

I have not found even one instance where Lonely Planet provided information that Rough did not have. If you are traveling to the north, you may want to consider reading Footprint before you leave -- it has some interesting information.

Also, all hotels -- even the top ones -- can be negotiated down in price. Send them an e-mail and ask for special rates, corporate rates, etc. You can stay at the Metropole in Hanoi for less than half their rack rate.

Must Have For Cambodia Trip
I decided to be a little different when I went to Southeast Asia. Instead of taking the Lonely Planet Books which I had done to past trips to China, and England I went with the Rough Guide. What a mistake. Such a mistake that about 1/2 through the trip, somewhere in Thailand I think, I threw the book out and picked up LP guides to Vietnam and Cambodia.

The Cambodia book is great. Great information, easy to follow guides to Angkor what else could you need. LP really tells it as it is. Cambodia is a place changing everyday. Fortunately for the last year or two its been relatively calm and tourist friendly. How long this will last is anyone's guess. I hope stablity have finally come to this country with such a tragic history.

Angkor is a unbelievable place and the LP book will get you through it and teach you a lot.

I bought a bunch of Vietnamese children's CDs for my Amerasian children and this was definitely the best. The vocals are exceptionally clear, the melodies catchy and beautiful, and the arrangements perfect for kids in their simplicity. The songs are a mixture of Vietnamese children's favorites and familiar Western tunes, e.g. "Twinkle Twinkle and "Frere Jacques" (though not direct translations)

My daughter is particularly enchanted with a beautifully melancholy tune about Chu Cuoi, the "man on the moon." We sometimes underestimate children's ability to appreciate complex tones and emotions in music. There are also a lot of fun witty songs, including about a mouse tricking a cat, and another about loving everyone in your (extended) family "the most."

The lyric book is simple, in English and Vietnamese. I found a few translation flubs but they're minor.

This is a must-have and I wish they would make more!

A great biography-if you like literature don't miss this.
I have read very little of Graham Greene and I have not read Vol 1 of this biography. However I found this Vol 2 (1939-55) an enthralling read. It covers his life during the second world war and then later in Vietnam and Africa. There is a bit too much about his lovesick affair with Mrs Walston (a peculiar arrangment and a bit uninteresting at times) The record of his war service and his time in publishing is fascinating.I guess if you have read the books and are already a fan then this biography is even more valuable. The life of G.G. is a novel in itself,full of colour,sadness and bravery.These biographies can be turgid in the wrong hands but Sherry only uses the details necessary to tell a vivid story.His prose is excellent and flows along. A very enjoyable read and it made want to get reading the novels-and Vol3 which is due in 2000 I believe.

Very Interesting Look at the War
Clancy really did a good job with this book. I have also read the first book in this new series he is putting out "Into the Storm - A Study in Command" and I have to say that this book is much better. One would think that as it is the second book, maybe he learned how to put together a non-fiction story in a more readable and interesting way or maybe the co-author was just a better writer. Clancy has teamed up with the General that was in charge of the air war in the Gulf War, and has a done himself a favor getting someone as inteligent and engaging to work with.

The book is basically three parts, the first section talks about the Generals career in the Air Force, the Air Force development from Viet Nam to the Gulf War and a touch of the politics involved within the different military branches. The second section of the book deals with the build up to the air war. The final section deals with the air war both the stand-alone part and as a joint effort with the ground war...

I used this book as a reference for a paper I wrote about recent economic and political reforms in Vietnam (the full text of which can be found on my web site). I found it invaluable. It provides a good, though overly optimistic, account of reform since the mid 80's. The author takes the reader through the changes made under the "doi moi" reform program through to economic progress of the mid 90's.

Though published in 1997, the research seems to have ended in 1995 and so it is a bit out-dated. But it is still a useful, easy read for anyone who wants to know how Vietnam has been changing over the past decade.

If you don't like memoirs, don't read the book..simple as that.
I'm not going to go into a lot of detail regarding the plot of this book, because others before me have done that for you. What I'm here to do is clarify. One person wrote in their review that they're upset that the author is "so into herself" and the book wasn't about war. Um, go back to school and learn the meaning of the word "memoir" before you go buying another book and trashing it unjustly. The book IS a memoir. It's the author's perception of her own life. Of COURSE she focuses the book on herself. That's the point. The book is not "chick lit masquerading as a commentation on war" or whatever it was that reviewer called it. It's the story of a girl's life, growing up with a Vietnam Vet for a father. It never promised to be about war specifically.

My opinion? It's beautiful. It's raw and honest and makes the reader compelled to keep reading. I didn't find the narrator unlikable at all. On the contrary, I found her vulnerable and sincere. I think that...
